HCL co-founders Ajai Chowdhry and Arjun Malhotra have announced the establishment of the Electronic Products Innovation Consortium (EPIC) Foundation, a non-profit organization whose goal is to create Indian electronics products and Indian brands in categories and high impact/high volume manufacturing. semiconductor chips by increasing the volume of Indian Electronics products.
The foundation has hired renowned industry expert Dr. Satya Gupta as CEO. Several industry leaders, academics, venture capitalists and management experts will serve as advisors to the foundation.
While India is rapidly advancing in electronics manufacturing for global brands and products, Indian products and Indian electronics brands are slowly disappearing over the last 2-3 decades. Today, the Indian electronics market share is below 10% in most high-volume categories. The founders said EPIC was created to meet this challenge.
The EPIC team is already working with various partners on 2 “nationally significant” products from the Top 10 list.
A 10.1-inch “Made in India” tablet for education based on AI/ML-driven cross-lingual translation in Indian languages (Voice-2-Voice, Text-2-Text, etc.) and a chip Indian LED driver for LED bulbs have been identified as the top priority.
“We worked with top 10 manufacturers as customers, design experts for design, global and Indian factories for manufacturing and Indian ATMP units for packaging to meet the demand for 700 million chips per year. An exciting opportunity of 70,000 8-inch wafers per year, which may lead to India’s first large-volume semiconductor chip designed, manufactured, packaged and consumed in India.” the founders said in a statement
The EPIC foundation will be officially inaugurated on April 13.
