Josh and Laura Sambono managed to bring down seven other finalists to win the AACTA Pitch: Bite 2021 initiative, the duo are expected to receive $ 10,000 in development funds and an exclusive distribution deal with Monster Pictures for their Bear drop concept.
Delivered in conjunction with Monster Pictures, the horror and genre film development initiative required director teams to take on multiple rounds of real-world challenges, such as financial planning, marketing, and audience development, and the creation of conceptual art.
The eight finalists then pitched their project to a panel of established horror filmmakers, including Kathy Charles, Chris Brown and Monster Pictures co-founder Grant Hardie.
Bear drop focuses on a bullied Indigenous teenager and an international marsupial expert who must protect a baby koala from a horde of vicious Drop Bears.
This is the second year in a row that the Sambonos have been among the finalists for the initiative which they say has “fundamentally changed” their approach to new projects.
Going through the process of creating a pitch deck, sizzle reel, marketing materials, and marketing content planning, we have helped to better articulate a story idea into a product that fits into the market. », They declared.
âIt was amazing having access to Grant Hardie and Alfie Lagos. They provided invaluable resources and support which gave us a new perspective on our distribution and marketing project.
Ivan Vukusic, director of AACTA awards and industry development, said the pair presented a very original premise.
“Bear drop is a unique and fun concept that has a lot of appeal and we are really happy to be working with Monster to help us bring it to our screens, âhe said.
âIt’s great to see Josh and Laura honing their pitch and development skills over the two years of working with Monster Pictures, and it’s a testament to the meaningful education and training offered by the initiative.
“We are really proud of this result”
