Kenneth LeRoy Kukes, 86, passed away suddenly on August 3, 2021 at his home in Kirkland, WA.
Ken was born on March 20, 1935, the youngest of six family members to John and Johanna (Hofferber) Kukes.
He was one of the first children born in the new Ellensburg General Hospital located on the corner of Third and Poplar. Ken completed grades 1-12 at Ellensburg. While studying at Morgan Junior High and Ellensburg High School, he enjoyed playing football, basketball and baseball. He started Central Washington State College in 1953, but retired to fulfill his military obligations in the United States Navy where he obtained the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class in the Electrical Division. He was honorably released in 1957. He then resumed his studies at Central Washington College.
In 1958 he married Rose Starkovich of Ronald, WA. The couple were lucky enough to have two children, Melissa and Eric.
In 1962 he joined Allstate Insurance as a management trainee. During his 33 years with Allstate, he worked in Washington, Oregon and at Allstate’s corporate headquarters in Northbrook, IL.
In 1984, Ken was promoted to Allstate Venture Company in Tokyo, Japan.
In 1995, he met and married his wife Mayumi Takahashi from Sapporo, Japan. They were married for 26 years.
When they retired from Allstate, they moved to Kirkland and made their home there.
Ken and Mayumi loved to travel and visited at least 20 different countries. They especially enjoyed an African safari.
Ken remained active in educational activities as well as volunteer work. He was also a member of the Seattle Sales and Marketing Management Association and a life member of the Snohomish Master Gardener Foundation.
He is survived by his wife Mayumi of Kirkland, his daughter Melissa (Justin) White and the grandsons of Cle Elum, WA. Ken is also survived by his brother Al Kukes, his sister Betty Jane (Forrest) Eastham, his sister-in-law Mike Kukes, all of Ellensburg and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, ex-wife Rose, son Eric, brothers Harry, Richard (Dick), sister Lillian (Russ) Morrison and sister-in-law Mary, nephews Alan and Tim Eastham .
Ken will always be remembered as a loving and generous husband, father, brother, companion and friend.
